Top 12 Songs of 2012

by Meredith on December 28, 2012

Adios, 2012!

(that’s Spanish for goodbye)

I made some awesome discoveries this year. I am more comfortable in my skin than I have ever been, all thanks to my quest to be a little more selfish. And even things that I knew would ultimately break my heart, or be hard to deal with, have been addressed. I can honestly enter 2013 a stronger person.

Do you know what got me through this year? Music.

Music, I think you’ll agree, is super powerful. So while I have yet to take those blasted guitar lessons, I have turned my Acadia into a mini recording studio. Every place I drive, I am surrounded by music that fits my mood.

And 2012 was a freaking fantastic year for music. So without further ado, these were my top played songs of 2012…

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together

The fact that I am leading with this song is a little frightening, even to me, but it WAS my most played song this year.

There are some employees I would take back in a heart beat. But some people really suck at exiting a company. They have no class about it. Yelling that you hope this place burns to the ground, on your way out the door, is just never a great idea. Stirring things up after your departure… also a bad idea. Just leave with grace.

Because if you don’t leave with grace, what you don’t realize is, now I’ve marked your file as “We are never ever getting back together”.

Don’t burn a bridge. You never know when you might want to cross it again.

Taylor Swift = My HR Break Up Song

Thrift Shop

Thank you, Stephie, for telling me about it! I swear, I’ve listened to it 906 times, and I’m still not sick of it.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis = Effing Awesome

Can’t Hold Us

More from the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis front. These guys just have the sickest beats. I have a special little driver’s seat dance just for this jam.

Can’t Hold Us = Can’t Stop Bouncing Around to the Sick Beat

Scream & Shout

It’s Britney, bitch! We finally get to see a real comeback!

I mean, really, do I even need to say anymore? + Britney = Does Anyone Have a Glow Stick I Can Borrow?

All I want in life now is a big, blonde afro. This group puts on a show, and you should see them in concert if you ever get the chance.

This song is me, through and through. When I am hurt, I am done with you. And I will never look back, and I will leave your emotional house a wreck. So hold on tight, because there is no coming back once you’ve been blown out of my life.

See ya later, suckers! Be gone with you!

Little Big Town = Pissed Off Music

Locked Out of Heaven

This is a super sexy little ditty. When I hear it, I want to rip Shaun’s clothes off. And if the kids are already in bed, and it’s Saturday night, I turn this on, and do a little strip tease for my man.

He likes it. He likes it a lot.

Bruno Mars = Sexy Time Music

Ho Hey

Do you ever feel like you’ve gone wrong somewhere? Like maybe you took a wrong turn in life? And you want to fix it, but you just don’t know how? Or even where to start?

I was catching up with a dear friend of mine and she said to me, “I get jealous of your marriage.”

I almost fell off my chair. “You’re jealous of my marriage? Why?”

To which she replied, “Because you always seem to be so happy. I can see it in your writing.”

That’s when it got real. I want to tell you all, in a very honest way, I do not have a perfect marriage. And I am sorry if you thought I did.

Actually, we have lots of problems. But we are working these things, and we are trying to be better spouses to each other and better parents for our children. I don’t blast the issues we’ve faced online. It’s not fair to him or me or our children. Yes, it’s fun to joke about marital problems. But when the laughing stops, and the screaming starts, I go into my little shell and clam up next to him.

This is my I’m-Sorry-It’s-Hard-To-Be-Married-Sometimes song to my husband.

I belong with you, Shaun. And you belong to me. You’re my sweetheart. And although I don’t know where I belong sometimes, I do know wherever I go in this life, I belong with you. No one else in this whole world understands my bullshit quite like you. And no one else in this whole world puts up with your bullshit quite like me.

The Lumineers = Marriage Sucks Sometimes, But Let’s Keep Pushing Ahead

We Are Young

I am getting old. I like to feel young.

Fun. = Fun!

Over You

You didn’t think I’d forget about my girl, Miranda, did you?!

You all know why I love this song. And even after all these years, I can assure you, it still hurts. Lars looks exactly like him, serving as a constant reminder of what we’ve lost. And time changes things, but it doesn’t make you forget the pain of suddenly losing someone you loved.

Over You = Remembering

Better Dig Two

Yeah. I am this kind of crazy. I’m sure all the boys are jealous that Shaun gets to be married to this kind of crazy. Because for real, it’s sort of insane the amount of jealousy I feel sometimes… and over the stupidest things!

Hey, at least I recognize it.

Better Dig Two = Like It Or Not, You Are Stuck With Me ‘Til Death

One More Night

We’ve established that I am sometimes relationship-dysfunctional, right? Okay. Good.

Also, I would like to go on record and add Adam Levine to my laminated list. So that makes 3 so far. Adam Levine, Jason Bateman, and Eric the Vampire.

Please, tell me again about how tattoos are gross? Because you’re super wrong. Tattoos are smoking hot.

Somebody That I Used To Know

Who doesn’t like this one? Bueller? Anyone? Bueller?

Exactly. Everyone likes this song. Even me. You can try to deny your love for this song, but you can’t. So just get on the band wagon.

I adore this Gotye cover by Walk Off the Earth.

Walk Off The Earth Cover = Freaking Fantastic Addiction

I love discovering new music, so share with me what you like! What songs got you through 2012?

unchained melody, I’ve been living on a different continent then my man for 8 of the last 12 months… and it sucks!

This makes me smile everytime I hear it. Clairy brown and the banging rackettes.

Tattoos are gross on some people (or if they’re overdone, not done well, etc.). On Adam, they totally work. I love him so much!

Jason Mraz’s song “I Won’t Give Up” has gotten me through lots this year. Hubs and I have had our lowest of low moments this year, and it was looking grim for our marriage. But luckily we are both fighters and neither of us are willing to give up on our love and marriage! I am such a huge music lover, and can also relate many songs to different times and emotions in my life!

Thanks for the new music I hadn’t heard of Mackelmore & Ryan lewis but they have been added to my spotify playlists! You should check out a group called Timeflies they are a lot like your guys, and have some fun dance in your car music! Happy New Year!

I just discovered the song Over You while watching The Voice. That show became my fall obsession. And, yes, Adam Levine is very nice to look at. Love that Lumineers song as well. I agree that music helps get us through. It also helps make working out go a little faster.
